Puffers, Open Toppers and Ramblers Return to North Coast

23 June 2003

As the school holidays approach and visitors flock back to the North Coast, Translink announced this week that its popular summer services would be back in action again.

The Antrim Coaster, Portrush Puffer and Causeway Rambler have all proved very popular with tourists and local residents alike, providing frequent, flexible transport around some of Northern Ireland’s most breath-taking scenery.

Translink also announced that for the first time in 10 years, a dedicated town service for Portrush would be in operation this summer. The hail and ride service will take in many key parts of the town and will operate on a flat-rate fare of 80p per journey.

Conor O’Cleary of Translink said the popularity of the services continues to grow each year.

“We introduced the Bushmills Open Topper more than a decade ago, and since then have added other popular services to the area including the Causeway Coaster and the Portrush Puffer. The Open Topper takes in the Bushmills Distillery, Portstewart, Dunluce Castle and the Giant’s Causeway. The Causeway Rambler also calls at Bushmills Distillery and the Causeway, but goes on to include Carrick-a-Rede, Ballintoy, Whitepark Bay and Dunseverick Castle. The Portrush Puffer, which looks like a steam train, is a great favourite, especially with family groups.

“When people visit the area, whether for a day trip or a longer stay, these services offer a great sense of freedom and relaxation. Being able to leave the car behind and just enjoy the beautiful surroundings makes the trip a much more satisfying experience.”

Mayor of Coleraine Cllr. Desmond Stewart commented “We are delighted to have the excellent support of Translink again for our summer season on the North Coast. I know the many visitors to the area appreciate the summer service and especially enjoy the fun and thrills of the Puffer and the Bushmills Open Topper.”

Information on all of the services available from Translink is available by either calling 028 70325400 or visiting the Translink website www.translink.co.uk
