Women’s Coalition on board with Translink’s Child Safety Bus

13 August 2003

Founder Women’s Coalition member and former MLA for North Down, Jane Morrice, recently viewed Translink’s Child Safety Bus, in a bid to encourage more Teachers and Youth workers in the North Down area to avail of its services.

“I am delighted to be able to visit the Child Safety Bus and come on board with Translink’s campaign to educate children in road safety.  Tragically many of those who lose their lives on our roads are children. Education for children, as well as for drivers, can save lives.

“I want to congratulate Translink for their excellent work, informing young people about the dangers on our roads and help them stay safe.”

Manned by two dedicated bus drivers, who are also trained safety officers, the bus gives children the opportunity to learn about road safety issues first hand. It is equipped to give young people information on issues from personal safety while using public transport to vandalism using contemporary media such as video.

“We found that young people respond better to first hand experience and information that doesn’t ‘preach’ at them,” explained Translink District Manager Dennis Kennedy.

“Our approach was therefore designed to get the message across without being too patronising, and to date it has been well received.” He said.

Teachers, Youth and Community workers can obtain more Information on the Child Safety Bus and other safety initiatives by contacting one of the Child Safety Bus co-ordinators on 028 9030 1732.
