Making the Green Option Even Greener!
9 October 2003
Public transport has long been viewed as the best option to keep the economy and the workforce on the move while minimising damage to the environment. Launching its corporate environmental plan (Thursday 9th October) and updated environmental policy, Translink has outlined its strategy to make the green transport option even greener.
“Public transport is an environmentally friendly substitute for travel by private car,” says Andy Bate, Translink’s Environmental Officer. “Our aim is to work towards eco-efficiency, and we continually try to provide a service that will contribute to reducing pollution. We understand however that unless we are fully aware of our own impact on the environment, we cannot meet our goal of protecting the health and safety of customers and staff while contributing to the future well being of the environment.
“Obvious examples of our environmental plan in action include the use of cleaner fuel in our buses and making sure that emission levels are low through proper maintenance of our vehicles. However one of the plan’s key objectives is to ensure that all our staff are aware of environmental issues and how they can personally contribute to achieving our aims – whether they are drivers, administration staff or any of our other colleagues.
“Our aims also involve working towards achieving the international environmental management standard ISO 14001 over the next five years. When sourcing equipment and resources, we ensure that we are part of responsible supply chains. We also work with customers and the community to protect the environment by supporting worthwhile initiatives and communicating with the public.”
The plan document, which outlines all of Translink’s objectives, is available from The Health, Safety & Environment Department, based at Central Station or by downloading it from the Translink website: www.translink.co.uk
