“Ulster in Bloom has been growing and becoming more firmly established with each year over the last quarter of a century,” explained Dr. Joan Smyth, Translink Chairman.
“Throughout our five year relationship with Ulster in Bloom, we have witnessed it grow to become a hotbed of competition. Indeed last year we had 137 entries, making 2003 our most successful year ever!
“I would particularly like to congratulate the Committees representing the Londonderry, Dungannon, Broughshane, Scarva, and Bangor entries who go forward to represent Northern Ireland in the City, Town, Large Village, Small Village and Coastal Resort categories in the Britain in Bloom competition.
“All of the Ulster in Bloom Committees can take pride in the knowledge that they have played a key role in bringing an extra sense of life and colour to Northern Ireland,” Dr. Smyth said.
Adding his congratulations, Translink Chief Executive, Keith Moffatt, explained how Ulster in Bloom has not only brightened up the cities, towns and villages of Northern Ireland, but also the railway and bus stations, enhancing the public transport experience for passengers.
“Open to all sections of our community, the competition encourages civic pride and makes our villages, towns and cities look and feel more welcoming during the vital tourist season,” He said.
“As part of our commitment to improving services, our support of Ulster in Bloom goes hand in hand with securing new trains and buses to make public transport more accessible and attractive to the customer.
“I am delighted at the partnership Ulster in Bloom has forged between Translink and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, and it gives me great pleasure to confirm that Translink will remain committed to supporting and indeed growing Ulster in Bloom.” Mr Moffatt said.
Speaking on behalf of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB), Chairman, Tom McGrath OBE, commented:
“The Ulster In Bloom awards presented today have been achieved through the sterling efforts of so many people in towns and villages across Northern Ireland. I congratulate all the winning entries, and look forward to seeing the fruits of their labours in the 2004 competition.”
