New Improved ‘Ulsterbus Foyle’ City Services Coming In September

29 June 2006

Ulsterbus this week announced details of a new and improved bus service for the city scheduled for introduction in September as part of the overall changes to local Ulsterbus services in Derry City and Londonderry Country as a result of a wider Ulsterbus Strategic Review.

Local Ulsterbus District Manager, Alan Young explained, “With a range of service enhancements in the pipeline, this is an exciting time for bus users in the area. Designed for ease of use the new simplified network renamed ‘Ulsterbus Foyle’ will offer better services for more people. Punctuality and service frequencies will be improved on all routes across the city and the service network will be extended to include both Strathfoyle and Newbuildings.

“Other key improvements include, easy to understand clock face timetables, improved connections with other Ulsterbus and Goldline services, enhanced Sunday services and most notably significantly enhanced accessibility thanks to the introduction of modern new low floor vehicles.

“There are also improvements to Goldline services including the provision of 1000 additional seats per day on the 212 Goldline Express service to Belfast, to be provided by the introduction of nine new double decker fully accessible Goldline coaches, two of which are already in passenger service.  There will also be enhancements to the frequency of Goldline services operating on both the Omagh and Dublin routes.

“However while much has been achieved there is still much to do and Translink is committed to working in partnership with the Department for Regional Development (DRD) Road Service and Derry City Council to address key infrastructure issues such as the lack of bus lanes, priority at junctions, permanent Park and Ride facilities and the provision of modern bus shelters in order to give passengers a fairer deal.”

“With the changeover date set for the 4th September, the current City services (DC1, DC2 etc) will also be renumbered in line with the new name ‘Ulsterbus Foyle’ (FY1, FY2 etc).

“In addition, modern blue and grey Ulsterbus livery has been developed and is already in use on some of the new vehicles operating on the Town Services.  The review has also included improved passenger information including simple easy to use colour-coded route maps. We are also reviewing the bus stop infrastructure with a view to providing new modern bus stops and improved passenger information.”

Mr Young added that Translink will host two public meetings to offer passengers the opportunity to hear directly about the changes and put their questions to Translink managers.

“We are offering passengers two opportunities on 3 July in the City Hotel (7.30pm) and 6 July in the Broomhill Hotel (7.30pm) to gain a full understanding of what the changes will mean for them. However passengers may also contact us at Translink’s Foyle depot on 028 7126 2261 for further information.”

Translink’s Ulsterbus Strategic Review will be completed over three years and is designed to transform attractiveness, effectiveness and efficiency of Ulsterbus services. It is designed to build on the early successes of the Belfast Metro and new improved Goldline services (10% and 20% growth respectively).

As part of the Ulsterbus Strategic Review of Derry City and Londonderry Country services, Translink also plans to enhance country routes and to simplify and standardise Limavady and Strabane Town Services.
