Translinks young artists make a great Impression

19 December 2006

Translink’s Ulster in Bloom Schools’ Art committee this week announced a record number of entries in the sixth annual competition. With masterpieces flooding in from almost sixty schools across Northern Ireland, this year’s contest is guaranteed to be close.

Translink’s Lynda Shannon said that the entries - which this year delve into the theme of Irish Impressionism - were of a higher standard than ever before.  “Key Stage 3 and Special Education pupils across Northern Ireland have clearly been very busy this term and have really excelled in meeting the competition brief.  They have created wonderful, colourful scenes using oil pastels, charcoal, paint and chalk, and have conjured up moving depictions of their local environments using a variety of Impressionist styles and techniques.”

Lynda added: “The Translink Ulster in Bloom Schools’ Art panel is delighted with the response the competition has received this year, although we know that picking winners will be extremely difficult. Given the record number of entries we’ll need to make an earlier start than usual on the short-listing phase!”

The Ulster in Bloom judging process will begin in the New Year with the shortlist revealed in early February.  The four winning artworks, one from Years 8, 9 and 10 and Special Education, will be announced later in the spring.  Winning pupils will be awarded top travel prizes for their school and family and will see their creations exhibited at NI’s two largest stations, Central and Great Victoria Street, as well as on Translink’s website.
