Lord Mayor asks commuters to connect with Metro

Today the Lord Mayor Jim Rogers welcomed Translink’s new ‘Metro connects’ advertising campaign aimed at encouraging members of the public to use Metro bus services, as the ideal way to get around Belfast.

Ciaran Rogan, Marketing Executive for Translink explained, “More and more people are choosing Metro with over 500,000 passengers travelling each week.  This represents a 20% increase however the challenge now is to grow from this and in turn make Belfast into a region renowned for excellent public transport and environmental sustainability”.

“Belfast is an increasingly vibrant, modern city with more to do and see than ever before.  This latest advertising campaign themed ‘Metro connects’  reflects these changes and aims to encourage even more people to think seriously about using public transport. Indeed with the Christmas period upon us, Metro offers a very cost-effective, accessible and convenient way to get around the city and enjoy all the delights of the upcoming festive activities. We would encourage all passengers to avail of our Metro day tickets starting at £2.50 or take advantage of the discounts available by using a Smartlink card. In addition we are also discounting day return rail fares by 1/3 when travelling after 9.30am once again offering a value for money way to visit the city”.

Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers said, “Public transport in Northern Ireland is now better, more modern and growing demonstrating that the argument for sustainable transport is being won. The development of the city has been mirrored by the development of our public transport service and now Metro plays a very central role in Belfast city life. I very much welcome Translink’s efforts to provide shoppers with the opportunity to avail of its many discounts and promotions particularly following the recent research carried out by Keepmoving.co.uk which revealed Belfast to be in the top 10 most congested European cities.  I would therefore very much encourage the public to leave their cars at home and avoid the car parking charges and the hassles of parking”.

The Metro connects ads feature neither buses nor people.  Instead streaming ribbons in Metro’s trademark magenta colour offer a visual metaphor for a bus service that connects commuters, shoppers, tourists, businesses, families and revellers with every part of Belfast.  As well as conveying the important public transport message the ads affectionately capture details of the Belfast cityscape.
