Larne Line Investment Ensures Shelter from the Storm

30 June 2008:

Translink has completed on time and on budget a £600k project to ensure that high seas and storm conditions don’t disrupt train operations on the Larne line at Boneybefore, Carrickfergus.  Work on site started in February 2008 and has been completed within a 16 week timeframe.

NI Railways took the proactive steps to strengthen the existing stone wall, which protects the embankment supporting the track. The company worked closely with the Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) to ensure all necessary measures were taken to protect the environment in Belfast Lough, and the surrounding Special Protection Area.

Anthony Stove, Translink Project Manager explained why N I Railways was committed to carrying out the work on the Larne line.  “Due to our unpredictable weather and the proximity of this stretch of line to the Lough, this upgrade to the sea defenses brings very important benefits for passengers and journey times by minimizing disruption to services”.

“Work onsite involved the installation of approximately 3,000 tonnes of reinforced concrete, comprising of a large beam at the base of the existing stone wall, a slab over the existing stone embankment and finally the construction of a wave wall, all over a 370m long stretch. Work took place during low tide meaning the construction workers only had access for 5 – 6 hours twice in a 24 hour period.”
