New Accessible buses for Ulsterbus Rural Areas

24th July 2008:

Imtac Representatives Elizabeth Black, Norman Moore and Henry Mayne discuss the benefits of accessible buses with Translink’s Technical Manager Paul Slaney

Translink recently welcomed Inclusive Mobility Transport Advisory Council (IMTAC) to a special preview of one of the new accessible buses currently in production.

This new bus order for 90 vehicles has come as a result of an investment in excess of 12.5 million. The vehicles will be the first of their kind in the United Kingdom.

The first of the new buses which will be used across the Ulsterbus network will be delivered on schedule in autumn of this year.

The vehicles are being bodied by local company Wrightbus of Ballymena in conjunction with Scania and Alexander Dennis Ltd of Scotland in conjunction with Volvo.

Translink’s Acting General Manager for bus services Frank Clegg explained, “These modern new easy access buses will mark another milestone in the transformation of bus services in Northern Ireland.  The wide low floor ramped access door will mean easy boarding for our customers particularly those with prams and buggies while passengers requiring wheelchair access will be able to board via a dedicated side door.

“These new buses offer improvements in comfort, quality, safety and accessibility for all our passengers. We hope they will help to attract even more people to use our services as a better way to travel.” Mr Clegg added

Michael Lorimer (Imtac) said "Members of Imtac welcomed the opportunity to view the new bus.  We believe the new bus will make it easier for disabled people and older people to travel in rural areas.  Imtac would like to congratulate Translink on their ongoing commitment to making services accessible to all."

Timetables for all Ulsterbus services are available by contacting Translink’s call centre on 028 9066 6630 or visiting www.translink.co.uk.
