Passengers Step Back in Time for ‘Rail’ Adventure as Country Comes to Town

10 September 2008:

It’s full steam ahead as NI Railways joins up with the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland to bring an authentic steam train to the 10th Anniversary celebrations of the Country Comes to Town Family Festival in Portadown on September 20.

The locomotive, which was originally built in the mid-nineteenth century, will transport festival-goers into a bygone era letting them take in the beautiful countryside along the route between Portadown and Lisburn.

NI Railways Route Manager South, Gerard McAtarsney, said the event is always a real crowd-pleaser: “NI Railways is proud to be a sponsor of this event and to once again run this popular service during such a milestone year for the festival. The steam train really gives passengers the impression that they are stepping back in time and is certainly a very memorable way to travel suitable for all the family to enjoy.

“I would also encourage the public to come to the event using Translink’s bus or rail services and take advantage of our special discount offers available including a third off NI Railways day return fares and of course the opportunity of free transport for senior citizens with a Senior SmartPass.

“We would also invite the public to come down to Portadown Station and enter our free competition to win family tickets for the train to Dublin along with Freedom of Northern Ireland tickets.”
