4th March 2010:
Everyone knows that embarking on a journey with a friend is always more fun than travelling alone and Translink is asking more people in North, South and West Belfast to become ‘friends’ with Metro to enjoy additional cost savings on bus travel within the city this Spring.
A new initiative called ‘Metro Friends’ has been launched to encourage more people to leave the car at home and travel together using Metro Smartlink for journeys along the Antrim Road, Malone Road and Falls Road bus corridors and enjoy even more value-for-money and better convenience.
Translink Belfast Area Manager, Billy Gilpin, says that there has been no better time for friends to get-together and ‘go Smartlink’:
“Cost-savings are a top priority for everyone at the moment and Metro in Belfast is the perfect excuse to leave the car at home, reduce expensive fuel and parking costs, and enjoy a reliable and frequent service that operates every five – 8 minutes at peak times. We want more local residents to take advantage of the great bus service right on their door step whether its for work, shopping, leisure, education or getting together with friends and family.
“This special ‘Metro Friends’ initiative offers our passengers five Metro journeys for just £4 within the City zone giving them a fantastic saving of £4, compared to paying by cash, from March 29 – April 4. Metro Friends focuses on the flexibility of Smartlink, enabling passengers to travel with others at the same time within the same zone and on the same Multi-journey card.
“Of course, ‘Metro Friends’ is an added bonus for passengers who can also purchase the Metro Smartlink card online for free saving another £1.50. Aside from the ‘Metro Friends’ offer, using Smartlink makes good economic sense when you compare it with cash fares. It’s only £1.10 for a Metro Smartlink multi-journey ticket within the City Zone compared to £1.60 for a normal cash fare. Over the course of a year, this could save you up to £200*.
“With Smartlink cards valid for 12 months, it makes Metro suitable for both regular passengers and those who travel now and again. Smartlink cards can be easily topped up and are a safer, cash-free way to travel, helping to speed up bus boarding times and any lost or stolen cards can be cancelled or ‘hotlisted’ to prevent fraudulent use. We hope that ‘Metro Friends’ will be an extra incentive for local people to try Metro and an opportunity to demonstrate just how attractive bus travel can be to take you both across and into the heart of the city.”
Households situated along the Antrim Road on Metro Corridor 1, Malone Road on Metro Corridor 8 and Falls Road on Metro Corridor 10 will be posted a special promotional code which they simply enter online at www.translink.co.uk/metrofriends to purchase the discounted Adult Smartlink Multi-Journey Card loaded with 5 journeys.
