Newry's £14.6m Rail Station Well Underway

17 April 2008:

Catherine Mason, Group Chief Executive of NITHC and Translink, was joined by Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy MP MLA,  to examine progress at the new Newry Rail Station, now under construction.  The £14.6million station, with a new road link and 300 park & ride spaces, is one of Translink¹s most important developments so far.  It will support significant growth in local and cross-border rail travel.

Conor Murphy MP MLA, Regional Development Minister visited the site of Newry’s new rail station today (17 April) to see how work is progressing.   The £14.6million station is one of Translink’s most important developments so far; a great facility for customers with a new road link and 300 Park and Ride spaces.
Catherine Mason, Group Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHC) and Translink, welcomed the Minister on site.  “This is a very big day for Newry and for public transport.  We want to give our customers a first class, modern station that the city can be proud of.  It will be comfortable, convenient and accessible to everyone” she said.
“NI Railways is a real success story; over the past 5 years 40% more people have made the choice to use the train because it is faster, more convenient and they like the service.  Around 200,000 people take the train from Newry every year and this new station will mean even more passengers - local and cross border – will choose to use rail.”

“We have already successfully completed many excellent bus and rail centres throughout Northern Ireland.  Our customers and employees enjoy the huge benefits they bring every day”.
“The Minister has shown real support for public transport and has a major share in its success.  I would like to thank him and his Department for the funding they have provided towards this project.  I look forward to welcoming our first customers through the doors when the new station is completed in late 2009”.
