Think safe, stay safe, when using a crossing

Every year, many people – pedestrians and motorists – misuse railway crossings, placing themselves and others, including people on the train, in danger.

However, railway crossings are safe – if used correctly.

REMEMBER: A train travelling at speed can't stop quickly

Using Railway Crossings Safely

If you're walking or cycling towards a crossing, remember:

read the warning signs and follow the instructions carefully.
cyclists should dismount and walk across the crossing.
children and animals should be suitably supervised at all times.
stop, look both ways and listen.
when the line is clear, cross quickly without running, still looking and listening as you go.
if there is a gate, always close it behind you.

If you're driving:

follow the Highway Code as well as the local warning signs when approaching a level crossing or any other form of crossing.
warning lights, audible alarms and automatic barriers must always be observed.
don’t be tempted to jump the lights or beat the barriers.
be responsible, set a good example.
