Infrastructure & Property Division

The Infrastructure & Property Division is responsible for the provision, maintenance, upgrade and renewal of the fixed equipment that enables our bus and train services to operate. 
The Infrastructure & Property Division is divided into four departments – Permanent Way (better known as track), Signalling & Telecommunications, Structures and Property:

Permanent Way
The Permanent Way Department is responsible for the maintenance, inspection and repair of 210 route miles of track of which approximately 55% is continuously welded rail and 45% is flat bottomed jointed track.

Signalling & Telecommunications (S&T) Department
The S&T Department are responsible for the provision, maintenance and repair of the train control systems and associated communications equipment.  On the NI Railways network there are almost 400 railway signals, 205 sets of points and over 60 level crossings.

Structures Department
The Structures Department is responsible for ensuring the structural integrity of 700 bridges both underline and overline, 290 culverts, 3 tunnels, 10 viaducts, 23km of sea defences, 144 embankments and cuttings and124 platforms.

Property Department
The Property Department is responsible for the renewal and maintenance of all NI Railways, Ulsterbus and Citybus (now Metro) properties.  This includes stations, depots, mechanical engineering garages and railway platforms.

Projects

The Infrastructure & Property Division is currently undertaking a number of projects aimed at improving the quality, reliability and safety of our services.  These include:

  • Improvements to facilities for both bus and rail passengers.
  • The relaying of track.
  • The expansion of the train protection system AWS (Automatic Warning System) to cover 90% of the network.
  • The upgrading of level crossings and accommodation crossings.
  • Adjustments to the infrastructure and new depot facilities for the new trains.
  • Improvements to passenger facilities.
